Census methodology for Tennessee research
How to work every decade, FAN clubs, and gaps without treating the census as a vital record.
Federal census schedules are the backbone of household reconstruction in Tennessee—but they are not birth certificates. Use them to cluster neighbors, track migration, and generate leads for land and probate.
Session order
- Collect every decade the household should appear (including edges in neighbor counties).
- Abstract ages, birthplaces, occupations, and household composition changes.
- Map FAN club surnames into deeds, estates, and tax lists.
- For 1850–1860 enslaved research, pair slave schedules with estate packets (see African American research).
