Census Research in Tennessee
Federal schedules, gaps, and how to use census evidence with Tennessee jurisdictions.
Federal census schedules are the backbone of household reconstruction. Tennessee has strong 19th–20th century coverage with caveats: undercounts, mobility, and enslaved persons enumerated without names before 1870 (with separate slave schedules in 1850–1860). Early federal losses and incomplete coverage make tax lists and land entries critical companions.
Strategy
- Collect every census appearance; note neighbors (FAN club).
- Correlate ages, birthplaces, and occupations with deeds and estates.
- For 1850–1860 enslaved research, use slave schedules + probate + plantation context (see African American research).
- Use tax lists and early land entries when a census year is thin or missing.
