In-depth topics
History notes
Davidson County (seat Nashville) is the metropolitan research hub for Middle Tennessee. Formed 1783 under North Carolina administration of the Cumberland settlements, it became a core Tennessee county at statehood (1796).
Research posture: expect heavy urbanization overlays—use city directories, later ward maps, and neighbor counties (Williamson, Rutherford, Sumner, Wilson, Cheatham) for border farms and migrations.
Record strategy: pair county deeds/probate with Nashville newspapers and Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) microfilm/catalogs. Courthouse fires and series gaps vary by book; always note volume/page and filming source.

Vital records
Tennessee statewide vital registration is relatively late; for pre-1908 work lean on church, Bible, newspaper, and county court/probate evidence. Delayed birth records and city health department series may exist for Nashville.
Always cite repository and series. This site’s guidance is a starting map, not a substitute for the clerk’s inventory.
Census
Federal census for Davidson from 1820 (earlier reconstruction via tax/land). Nashville city directories are high-value for late-19th/20th century identity.
Complement census with tax lists and, where available, city directories.
Courthouse & contacts
Davidson County courthouse complex, Nashville. Confirm current clerk/register hours and which series remain on-site vs. off-site storage or microfilm at Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA).
