Occupation-era clerks — research method note

Published April 18, 2026

This method note covers occupation-era clerks for Tennessee genealogy.

Core rule

Fix the event year first, then the jurisdiction that held the courthouse (or independent city* office) that year. Modern maps and place-names often mislead.

Session checklist

  1. Write the person, year, and place exactly as the source states it.
  2. Confirm parent/daughter county or city* boundaries for that year.
  3. Abstract every name in land, probate, and tax evidence (FAN club).
  4. Search newspapers and churches when civil vitals are thin.
  5. Log negative searches before moving to paid databases.
